Whether it’s your families health or the health of our planet, your home has a huge impact on our environment.
Today, eighty-five percent of all energy produced in the United States comes from burning fossil fuels. That energy powers almost two-thirds of our electricity and virtually all of our transportation.
There are a number of problems associated with fossil fuels, most of which stem from the by-products created when they are burned to create energy. Chief among those byproducts are carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, greenhouse gases that are major contributors to Global Warming . Largely because of coal and petroleum combustion, the amount of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide in the air today are thirty-five percent and eighteen percent higher, respectively, than they were before the industrial era.
In the United States, we consume between 20 and 25 percent of the world's resources yet only represent 5 percent of the world's population. We tend to live in larger homes, drive bigger cars, and consume products that are discarded at a rapid rate. Because of this, we are emitting pollutants at a rate that is not sustainable for future generations. We must begin to conserve more, use less, and become more efficient. The homes we live in must become more efficient, the vehicles we drive must emit less, and the products we purchase must be more responsible.
At Pride, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint, recycling the materials no longer being used, and using products that last longer and are more efficient.
Other byproducts of fossil fuel combustion include sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, both of which contribute to acid rain, and hydrocarbons, which can react with nitrogen oxides to form smog. These byproducts are major contributors to ailments such as asthma, lung disease, and respiratory problems.
